ANIKA August 16 2025

Anika was about to do their longest DJ set.

Victoria, BC Canada. Queer. House. Techno. Dancers only.

RUSH loves House and Techno as both sound and culture, offering a home for dancers and the queer community. Based in a once-abandoned nightclub, it trades its past pop-up mobility for mastery, shaping its identity through refined sound, dance, and dark ambiance.

Hey, I’m Josh and I run Rhythm You Should Hear.

I really enjoy letting a DJ have enough time to wander, find multiple pockets, do the thing.

2 hours is good-okay.

More is better.

Less than 2: RUSH doesn't live in that bullshit mainstream avenue trying to cram 20 tracks into 60 minutes.

Could be your thing, it isn't ours.

I asked Anika if they’d like to play a 4 hour, open to close set.

I got an immediate yes with a request: fatigue mats.

Anika needed those fatigue mats to help keep their feet and bones alive!

I love where hosting parties leads me, in this case, it was to Russell Hendrix, a commercial kitchen supplies store in Victoria.

Fuelled with motivation from seeing “Danny Tenaglia at stereo in mtl once do a 12 hour set, at like age 60, just having beat cancer. Like, I was astonished.”

Anika was about to do their longest DJ set.

I love Anika’s sound.

Big.

Soulful.

Club-centred.

Influences from Bossa Nova and Jazz.

Anika is never shy to play the lyrics - a touchy subject in the scene.

I love it.

They’ve got the Villalobos-esque booth energy.

Dancing.

Jerking full body response to what’s playing

It's infection.

Holding their ground open to close, we all chanted “one more” as I pushed closing at 2 AM to 2:10 and then again to 2:20.

Then I sadly turned the lights to blue and up ushering everyone out by 2:30 AM.

Pesky AKA bullshit Provincial Liquor laws disallow patrons being in a liquor primary establishment after 2:30 AM.

Easier to follow little rules like this than risk it but I’ve got stories about risking it!

Another time for the “grey area” stories.

C U on the DF soon,

Josh Franklin
