Hey, I’m Josh and I run Rhythm You Should Hear.
One thing I love and promote is pairing DJ’s in an evening outside of complimenting sound.
I like to ask a DJ simply, “who would you like to play with?”
So simple but very impactful.
Whether it is a complimenting sound, someone they admire, an orchestrated b2b, there are a plethora of reasons that all lead to a synchronized night of music and synergy.
Dataist (Steeve) and DJ Weezie (Louisa) both wanted to play together but this always made sense.
They are long time pals, having played together many times.
They understand each other's minds and directions.
Even a misdirection, “not the track I would have played next but challenge accepted” yields beautiful moments.
I hear repeatedly that b2b’s are controversial.
Some DJ’s swear against them and other’s excel at them but there is a throughline to both sides of the coin.
“I need to intimately, in a hard to explain, metaphysical plane, be connected to whom I am/would play with.”
Sounds goofy.
It's not.
It’s a super soft, hard science and when the combination is concocted correctly, it slaps.
Weezie and Dataist slapped each other all night long.
I have many mixers to choose from, always asking which ones the DJ’s prefer.
This evening they chose the Allen and Heath Xone 96.
A powerful, warm analogue machine with the adored built in FX and extra band controls.
A few thoughts from me, Josh:
Dataist and I are in the booth chatting about our mutual love for Laurie Anderson.
Weezie is out of earshot 100%.
As we are nerding about Anderson, low and behold, Weezie mixes in an edit of O Superman by Laurie Anderson.
We are shocked.
We tell Weezie what just happened.
She’s shocked. Synergy.
I do question, was Weezie playing something that triggered Dataist and I to start talking about Laurie Anderson?
How did this happen?
It’s okay to not problem solve this one.
It was beautiful.
A few thoughts from Dataist:
For me the biggest thing was how actually invested in the dancefloor people were.
I am often just sort of stared at by the people in the front and I truly dislike it.
I remember going to Mr Sundays in NYC 10 years ago and the crowd did not concern themselves with the DJ and it was very freeing. We like that.
A few thoughts from Weezie:
Sitting in your little lighting booth, you (Josh) triggered the lights to flash strobe during After Five by Luke Alessi Dataist played *chefs kiss*
Everything synched perfectly for me, at that moment.
